Care of Ceramic Tiles

Practical tips for maintaining the beauty and durability of ceramics for much longer

Maintenance Tips

Keeping ceramic tiles in top condition is simple and efficient. With some basic care, you can preserve its appearance, durability and functionality for many years to come. By following these tips, your ceramic tile will remain as resistant and beautiful as new.

Maintenance Tips

01.

Ceramics are one of the easiest tiles to clean. We advise you to always consult the packaging and manual of the product purchased and remember that there are particularities depending on the surface finish of the ceramic tile.

02.

Clean water is often all that is needed to clean your tile. If you feel you must use some product, use a neutral cleaner made specifically for grout or tile or a mildly alkaline detergent.

03.

Never drip the cleaning product directly on the floor, some products can present chemical attack and be marked exactly with the drip marks, it is recommended that the product be diluted and applied on a cloth.

04.

Always rinse with clean water after cleaning to remove any residue. Any residual cleaner, soap or detergent should be removed to prevent the ceramic from becoming dull and susceptible to quicker soiling.

05.

The use of stronger alkaline products and or hydrofluoric acids is not recommended. Normally the tiles resist, but the grouting does not. The entire system of the ceramic tile is compromised and begins to require maintenance ahead of time or it can generate infiltration problems, dirt accumulation, bacteria.

06.

Products commonly known as "stone cleaners" have hydrofluoric acid, which when reacting with the Silica (present in the structure of the tiles) does not clean, but leaves the tiles more porous, with a false impression of efficient heavy cleaning, but with time will impregnate the dirt even more.

Ceramic tiles for a safe and healthy environment

Creating a healthy environment is more important than ever. The materials in areas where we spend a significant amount of time on a daily basis have the potential to affect our health both positively and negatively.

Ceramic-based materials are appreciated for their lack of harmful chemicals, easy maintenance and ability to promote cleanliness and hygiene. Each type of ceramic tile, including porcelain tiles, quarry tiles, wall tiles and pressed paving, shares all these benefits of ceramic tiles:

  • Eco-friendly maintenance: No harsh chemicals needed for cleaning! Cleaning with soap and water is all that's needed to get rid of most dirt.
  • Resistant to bacteria: Ceramic tiles are inhospitable to the growth of bacteria and other microbes, such as mold.
  • Antimicrobial: Ceramic tile options are available that can suppress and even destroy harmful microorganisms such as mold, fungi, bacteria and viruses.
  • Allergen-free: The high firing temperature of ceramic tiles - usually over 2,000°F - burns off all organic compounds. In addition, the ceramic's non-porous surface does not allow environmental allergens such as dust, dirt and pollen to penetrate.

Energy and life cycle cost savings

Exceptional lifecycle cost = better value

Ceramic tiles have an exceptional life cycle. See the life cycle cost study below for data on how ceramic tiles outperform other floor finishes in cost per square meter over time. Ceramic tiles have been the preferred choice around the world for centuries for their timeless beauty and durability.

Regional manufacturing and raw materials

With tile manufacturers in many regions of North America, tile products and installation made from local raw materials are widely available, significantly reducing energy consumption and emissions from long-distance shipping. In many cases, the raw materials are extracted within a radius of 800 kilometers from the production facility and the workplace. In addition, the clays and other materials used to make tiles are plentiful.
